Mill of Inverarity Farm

A Family Business - Since 1884

Mill of Inverarity is a working family farm with both rich heritage and a modern vision.

The farm is run by Alison and Rob Stodart with their two sons, Rory and Tom. Their daughter Vicky can often be found around the farm with her husband and their daugher.

Under their management, the farm has changed beyond recognition to where it is today - a family business that utilises modern farming ideas along with traditional knowledge and experience.

Still a mixed farming enterprise, it has grown to include home produced beef, grass fed lamb and free-range eggs.

Our History

Alison's family have farmed at Mill of Inverarity since 1884 and Rob’s family farmed in the picturesque village of Waterbeck near Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire, milking cows.

Rob and Alison met, fittingly, in a cattle mart and married in 1992. Following a change in family circumstances, the opportunity arose for Rob and Alison to move back to Mill of Inverarity in 1996 along with their children and the family have been here ever since - turning Mill of Inverarity into what it is today.

"There are lots of highs and lows in farming.
Working together as a family can have its challenges, but is very rewarding and can also be a lot of fun."

A Family Business

For Five Generations

Alison's Great Grandfather John Syme moved from Fife to take on the tenancy at The Mill in 1884. This means that it is now the fifth generation of the same family farming The Mill.

The Stodart Family

Alison and Rob

Alison studied at Aberdeen University after leaving school. Once the children were born, she gained a post grad teaching qualification. Alison now handles the finances on the farm and is chief trouble shooter!

Rob grew up on his family's farm milking dairy cows. This is where he learned his excellent stockmanship and eye for detail with all animals. He has passed this skill onto the boys.

Vicky

Vicky works outside of the farm with the NHS as an occupational therapist. She's busy with her young family but can often be found on the farm lending a helping hand.

Rory

Rory studied agriculture at Newcastle University and has introduced a rotational grazing system for cattle and sheep and developed the egg production side of the farm. He is very much hands on with the management and accounts.

Tom

Tom trained as an agricultural engineer and has responsibility for the arable side of the business, machinery and repairs and has recently started growing potatoes.

Alison's father John Syme

Seen here with granddaughter Vicky, John was born at the farm, and has been farming in his own right since 1970.

He created the roots of the farm as we know it.

He still takes an active role on the farm and can often be found out and about, delivering eggs.

Fifth Generation Farmers

From 1884 to the modern day, we're proud that Mill of Inverarity Farm has remained in the same farming family for five generations.

This photograph features Alison's grandfather, Colin Syme, working at the Mill hand shearing a sheep.
